| Notes: |
King Edward was styled as, "Dei Gratia, Rex Angliae et Franciae et Dominus Hiberniae." |
Edward took part in the Yorkists' victory at the battle of Northampton. |
During the battle of Mortimer's Cross, a trick of weather made it appear momentarily as if three suns were shining. Edward interpreted this as a sign of God's favour, and was to adopt as a badge the "Sun in Splendour". Shakespeare's famous line in Richard III, "Now is the winter of our discontent/made glorious summer by this sun of York," refers to the badge. |
Edward consolidated his position as king by defeating the Lancastrians at the battle of Towton, said to be the bloodiest battle ever fought in England. |
Edward was crowned by Thomas Bourchier, Cardinal Archbishop of Canterbury. |
In 1465, Edward forbade his subjects from "hustling of stones" and other games like bowling. |
Warwick's rebellion was crushed by Edward at the battle of Barnet. |
Edward's final defeat of the Lancastrians took place at the battle of Tewkesbury, where Margaret of Anjou was captured and her son, the Prince of Wales, killed. |
Edward probably died of appendicitis. |
A character, as Edward, Earl of March, in Shakespeare's plays, 2 and 3 Henry VI, and as King Edward, in Richard III. |
In Henry VI, Part 3, Edward's father the Duke of York says after the battle of Wakefield that he is proud of his sons:
But this I know- they have demean'd themselves
Like men born to renown by life or death.
Three times did Richard make a lane to me,
And thrice cried 'Courage, father! fight it out.'
And full as oft came Edward to my side
With purple falchion, painted to the hilt
In blood of those that had encount'red him."
Henry VI, Part 3
Act 1, scene 4 |
Portrayed by Cecil Hardwicke in the 1955 film of Shakespeare's play, "Richard III." |

Monarchy With David Starkey
Mary Cranitch, David Hutt
Closed-captioned, Color, Dolby, DVD, Widescreen, NTSC
(2006-09-26)
Eminent scholar and energetic storyteller Dr. David Starkey (The Six Wives of Henry VIII) serves as your guide through nearly 10 centuries of royal rule in England. From the fall of the Roman Empire to the Restoration, Starkey vividly describes the human drama behind the throne, with all its intrigue, lust, treachery, and thirst for power. You visit the very stages upon which history played out?Westminster Abbey, Bosworth Field, the dreaded Tower of London, and more?and explore the true character of the men and women who wore the crown. In this rich tapestry, Starkey identifies a unifying thread. On one hand, England required authoritarian might to stand strong against external threats. On the other, it cherished its longstanding tradition of rule by consent of the governed. The dynamic tension between these two impulses enabled the monarchy to survive as the oldest-functioning political institution in Europe.

The Lives of the Kings and Queens of England, Revised and Updated
Paperback
(2000-02-15)
This essential reference is a concise, accessible guide to the great dynasties of English royalty. A collection of biographical sketches that encompasses the period from the establishment of monarchical power by the early Norman kings through the reign of Elizabeth II, The Lives of the Kings and Queens of England tells the stories of many monarchs and their colorful lives--some merry, some cruel, some heroic, others sinister. Antonia Fraser and a collection of distinguished contributors bring the people and events to life in this lavishly illustrated volume that is both engrossing history and an excellent reference tool. This updated edition includes a new essay describing the recently tumultuous reign of the Windsors. Included are details of the weddings of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, and of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson; the acrimonious collapse of the marriages; the effect the media have had on the royal family's image; and the fire at Windsor Castle. Such recent events as Diana's tragic death, the decommissioning of the Royal Yacht Britannia, and the launching of Queen Elizabeth's own website are also discussed. Accompanying the text are 175 contemporary illustrations and drawings of the royal coats of arms, with their significance explained by J.P. Brooke-Little, Richmond Herald of Arms. This is a dazzling story of a thousand years of English history, as told through the lives and deeds of the nation's sovereigns.

Richard III [Region 2]
Laurence Olivier
PAL
The third and final entry in Laurence Olivier's Shakespeare triptych, Richard III (1954) is an audacious portrait of a man determined to prove himself a villain. As the personification of evil impudence, Olivier portrays the Duke of Gloucester with such aplomb that he brings the audience onto his side. This is true even as Richard engineers plots to murder his brother Clarence (John Gielgud), betray his cousin Buckingham (Ralph Richardson), and seduce his niece Lady Anne (Claire Bloom). From the play's famous opening lines ("Now is the winter of our discontent"), Olivier delivers every speech with truly Machiavellian splendor, and his superb staging of the climactic battle rivals his work on Henry V. Regrettably, this would be Olivier's last Shakespeare film, as a planned adaptation of Macbeth was abandoned for financial reasons. Olivier justly received an Oscar® nomination for his performance; and believe it or not, this film was the inspiration for the original Blackadder! --Kevin Mulhall
