Notes:
Alphonso was involved in one of the classic sad stories of the Iberian peninsula. Alphonso's son, Peter, married Princess Constance of Castile. When Constance died in 1345, Peter secretly married her cousin Ines, who had lived with them. Alphonso had Ines murdered because he did not want his grandson's claims threatened. According to legend, after Peter became king he had Ines's body exhumed and put her on a throne next to his. The sad fate of Ines was the subject of many Spanish poems and tragic plays.
