| Notes: |
King George was styled as "King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg, etc., Defender of the Faith, " until the union of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801. At that point, his style became, "By the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith." |
George was crowned by Thomas Secker, Archbishop of Canterbury. |
George was very interested in machinery of all types, and was a skilled assembler and repairer of watches. |
Although the 13 colonies did break free, George's reign was noted by many other important events. During his reign, Britain defeated France in three wars, most notably the Napoleonic conflicts. Territories across the globe became British, including Australia. It was also during his reign that the English system of constitutional monarchy assumed its modern form. |
George survived two attempts on his life. A woman tried to stab him in 1786. Then, in 1800, George survived another assassination attempt, this one made while the king was attending the London premiere of Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro." |
Kingston, Ontario, was named for King George, as was Prince George, British Columbia, although the latter was named in 1807, long after George's princeship. |

Monarchy With David Starkey
David Hutt, Mary Cranitch
Closed-captioned, Color, Dolby, DVD, Widescreen, NTSC
(2006-09-26)
Eminent scholar and energetic storyteller Dr. David Starkey (The Six Wives of Henry VIII) serves as your guide through nearly 10 centuries of royal rule in England. From the fall of the Roman Empire to the Restoration, Starkey vividly describes the human drama behind the throne, with all its intrigue, lust, treachery, and thirst for power. You visit the very stages upon which history played out?Westminster Abbey, Bosworth Field, the dreaded Tower of London, and more?and explore the true character of the men and women who wore the crown. In this rich tapestry, Starkey identifies a unifying thread. On one hand, England required authoritarian might to stand strong against external threats. On the other, it cherished its longstanding tradition of rule by consent of the governed. The dynamic tension between these two impulses enabled the monarchy to survive as the oldest-functioning political institution in Europe.

Monarchy With David Starkey, Set 2
David Hutt, Mary Cranitch
Closed-captioned, Color, DVD, Widescreen, NTSC
(2007-10-30)
How English royal rule evolved from 1660 to the dawn of the 20th century With a deft blend of disciplined scholarship and dramatic flair, Dr. David Starkey continues his epic documentary on English royal rule. In this series, you'll meet lustful, cagey Charles II, who sired 17 illegitimate children while outmaneuvering his opposition; austere William of Orange, whom Parliament invited to conquer England; plain, pragmatic Anne, who oversaw the expansion of a great empire; George I, who established the Hanoverian line but never learned English; and regal Victoria, who ushered in a new age that saw the Monarchy become the model for middle-class morality. This lively, engrossing narrative shows how events in the bedroom and on the battlefield shaped Europe's longest-surviving governing institution. In a world rocked by populist revolutions, how did England's monarchs manage to hold on to power? Starkey finds answers in the English tradition in which kings and queens rule by consent of the people, as well as in the adaptability and tenacity of those who sat on the throne.
