| Notes: |
King William was styled as "By the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith." |
Before succeeding to the throne, William had 10 children by his mistress, Mrs. Jordan. Most of them were very unhappy that William did not do anything for them when he became king; William told friends that the children didn't understand that times had changed and that politically, it was not possible to treat a monarch's illegitimate children as well as Charles II had treated his. |
Crowned by William Howley, Archbishop of Canterbury. |
William's coronation was so simple and streamlined--with an eye to economy--that London wits called it the "half-crownation." |
William was very fond of a giraffe given to him by the Pasha of Egypt. He built a large paddock for it at Windsor, but the animal survived for only two years. |
In 1830, William nearly caused grave diplomatic problems by referring to the king of France as an "infamous scoundrel." He was severely lectured by the Duke of Wellington, and admitted he had been drunk when he made the comment. |
William had been seriously ill with asthma for several weeks before his death. |

Monarchy With David Starkey
Mary Cranitch, David Hutt
Closed-captioned, Color, Dolby, DVD, Widescreen, NTSC
(2006-09-26)
Eminent scholar and energetic storyteller Dr. David Starkey (The Six Wives of Henry VIII) serves as your guide through nearly 10 centuries of royal rule in England. From the fall of the Roman Empire to the Restoration, Starkey vividly describes the human drama behind the throne, with all its intrigue, lust, treachery, and thirst for power. You visit the very stages upon which history played out?Westminster Abbey, Bosworth Field, the dreaded Tower of London, and more?and explore the true character of the men and women who wore the crown. In this rich tapestry, Starkey identifies a unifying thread. On one hand, England required authoritarian might to stand strong against external threats. On the other, it cherished its longstanding tradition of rule by consent of the governed. The dynamic tension between these two impulses enabled the monarchy to survive as the oldest-functioning political institution in Europe.

Monarchy With David Starkey, Set 2
Mary Cranitch, David Hutt
Closed-captioned, Color, DVD, Widescreen, NTSC
(2007-10-30)
How English royal rule evolved from 1660 to the dawn of the 20th century With a deft blend of disciplined scholarship and dramatic flair, Dr. David Starkey continues his epic documentary on English royal rule. In this series, you'll meet lustful, cagey Charles II, who sired 17 illegitimate children while outmaneuvering his opposition; austere William of Orange, whom Parliament invited to conquer England; plain, pragmatic Anne, who oversaw the expansion of a great empire; George I, who established the Hanoverian line but never learned English; and regal Victoria, who ushered in a new age that saw the Monarchy become the model for middle-class morality. This lively, engrossing narrative shows how events in the bedroom and on the battlefield shaped Europe's longest-surviving governing institution. In a world rocked by populist revolutions, how did England's monarchs manage to hold on to power? Starkey finds answers in the English tradition in which kings and queens rule by consent of the people, as well as in the adaptability and tenacity of those who sat on the throne.

The Lives of the Kings and Queens of England, Revised and Updated
Paperback
(2000-02-15)
This essential reference is a concise, accessible guide to the great dynasties of English royalty. A collection of biographical sketches that encompasses the period from the establishment of monarchical power by the early Norman kings through the reign of Elizabeth II, The Lives of the Kings and Queens of England tells the stories of many monarchs and their colorful lives--some merry, some cruel, some heroic, others sinister. Antonia Fraser and a collection of distinguished contributors bring the people and events to life in this lavishly illustrated volume that is both engrossing history and an excellent reference tool. This updated edition includes a new essay describing the recently tumultuous reign of the Windsors. Included are details of the weddings of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, and of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson; the acrimonious collapse of the marriages; the effect the media have had on the royal family's image; and the fire at Windsor Castle. Such recent events as Diana's tragic death, the decommissioning of the Royal Yacht Britannia, and the launching of Queen Elizabeth's own website are also discussed. Accompanying the text are 175 contemporary illustrations and drawings of the royal coats of arms, with their significance explained by J.P. Brooke-Little, Richmond Herald of Arms. This is a dazzling story of a thousand years of English history, as told through the lives and deeds of the nation's sovereigns.
